Bamberg Free Tour
At 11 am, our journey begins at the Obstmarkt square, located in the vibrant centre of Bamberg's historic district. As we stroll through the enchanting streets of this Bavarian gem, we'll uncover its prominent monuments and uncover intriguing historical narratives.
The adventure starts with a crossing of the Regnitz river, where we will pause to appreciate the old town hall. This medieval structure, perched above the waters, captivates visitors with its stunning baroque frescoes. Legend has it that this building symbolizes the townspeople's triumph over ecclesiastical authority—a story worth sharing!
We will delve into the dark days of the witch hunts and trials that took place during the 17th century, a harrowing period that led to the execution of nearly 1000 women. Prepare for an eerie recounting of these haunting events!
Our next stop will be the Cathedral, recognized as Bamberg's most frequented site. With a history spanning over a millennium, this architectural marvel houses the enigmatic Bamberg rider. The identity of this equestrian figure is still debated, with theories suggesting it could represent King Stephan of Hungary, Constantine the Great, or one of the Three Wise Men.
Adjacent to the cathedral, we will encounter the grand Old Residence and New Residence of the Bishops, impressive palatial structures dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Following this, we will venture into the charming district known as little Venice, perhaps the city's most picturesque area.
Our final stop will lead us to the historic tavern Schlenkerla. Here, as we admire its distinctive exterior, we will discuss its renowned specialty: smoked beer. Did you know that it offers a flavor reminiscent of ham?
The tour concludes at 1:30 pm outside the tavern.
