Kochi Free Walking Tour
Description
Explore the remnants of ancient fortresses and European churches as you immerse yourself in the historical tapestry of southern India with this complimentary walking tour of Kochi.
Tour Overview
Kochi’s rich colonial heritage, shaped by the Spanish, Portuguese, and much later, the British, invites you to discover its profound past. The journey begins beside the iconic Chinese fishing nets, where you will have the opportunity to observe local fishermen skillfully utilizing these unique traps.
Our exploration will continue toward the Vasco da Gama Square, a site where tales of Portuguese commerce and their significant impact on the area will be shared. As we navigate the charming streets, we will arrive at the Church of Saint Francis, recognized as the oldest European church in India and the final resting place of Vasco da Gama.
Following this, we will visit the Dutch Cemetery, where the gravestones of early Dutch settlers can be found. Here, we’ll delve into the early colonial history and the diverse cultural influences that have left their mark on Kochi.
Our journey proceeds with a stop at the Indo-Portuguese Museum, a modest yet remarkable venue displaying a collection of art and historical treasures that narrate the Portuguese arrival in India. Next, we will marvel at the stunning Cathedral Basilica of Santa Cruz, renowned for its exquisite colonial design, exemplifying a wonderful blend of architectural styles.
As we move on, we'll pass by the Cochin Cultural Centre before concluding our tour at the significant Jail of Freedom Struggle. This site played a critical role in the Indian fight for independence, and you will learn about the vital sacrifices made during this pivotal period.
The free tour will wrap up here after an engaging two-hour experience.
