Details of the Excursion
After a timely pick-up from your accommodation in Esquel, we will set off toward the enchanting vistas of Los Alerces National Park. Let us embark on this adventure!
Within approximately 45 minutes, we will arrive at Villa Futalaufquen, a charming village enveloped by coihues, cypresses, and Antarctic beeches. At this point, we will encounter the park's entrance and its informative center, which offers insights into the park's heritage as a protected area since 1937. This introduction will reveal the ongoing preservation efforts for the ancient larches through engaging displays of photographs and models.
Next, we will travel to Puerto Limonao to commence a 1,640 ft (500 m) trek through a verdant landscape adorned with myrtles and ferns towards the Hostería Futalaufquen. This architectural highlight, designed by Bustillo, provides a glimpse of the stunning lake views that await.
Our next stop is the Mirador de Pinturas Rupestres (Viewpoint of Cave Paintings), accessible via vehicle. Here, we'll uncover ancient ochre carvings that chronicle the connection between the area's early residents and their environment. The sight of Futalaufquen Lake from this vantage point is breathtaking!
Continuing our journey, we will make our way 2.48 mi (4 km) to the serene Waterfall Irigoyen, reached by a scenic forest path. At the waterfall's base, we will pause to relish the cool mist and the beauty of our surroundings. Afterward, we will walk along the trail of the Arrayanes River for 0.93 mi (1.5 km).
If hunger strikes, we will take a break for a delightful picnic lunch featuring pizza, pinchos, cured meats, and various cakes, all complemented by wine, juice, and water. Savor each bite!
The journey continues as we witness the Menéndez River, a vital stream that nourishes the valley, guiding us to Puerto Chucao. Here, one of the day's most awe-inspiring sights emerges: Lake Menéndez. This picturesque lagoon is encircled by snow-capped mountains and lies beneath the dominating presence of the Glaciar Torrecillas, which towers at over 7,217 ft (2,200 m).
It's worth noting that Lake Menéndez is the sole lake within Los Alerces National Park where motorized boating is prohibited, ensuring the protection of its ecosystem and marking it as the cleanest lake in the area. The glacial waters contribute to its stunning turquoise hue, making it a perfect photo opportunity!
As our day winds down, we'll indulge in a sweet and savory snack alongside tea, coffee, and mate before returning you to your hotel after an enriching 8.5 hours.
