Day Trip to Tomar and Almourol Castle

We will commence our excursion at Praça da Figueira at the scheduled time. Following an approximately hour-and-a-half journey across the picturesque landscapes of central Portugal, we will reach our initial stop, Almourol Castle.

Approaching this historic 12th-century fortress, situated on a small island in the Tejo River, we will take a boat ride to reach the castle and explore its 10 notable towers. During our exploration, we will gain insights into its fascinating history. Did you know it stands as one of the key military landmarks of the Iberian Reconquista?

After a tour lasting about 1.5 hours, we will proceed to the heart of Tomar, renowned as Templar City. Here, we will wander through the historic center, abundant with medieval structures connected to the Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple, and uncover more about King Alfonso I and the Templars.

Accompanied by our knowledgeable guide, we will visit the churches of São João Batista and Santa María del Olivar. Additionally, you will have some leisure time to enjoy traditional Portuguese dishes at one of the medieval-style eateries nearby at your own pace.

After spending 2 hours in Tomar, we will explore the Convent of Christ, a vital treasure of the Templars, designed to emulate the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. A 2-hour guided tour will include the exquisite cloisters, beautifully adorned chapels, and the renowned Manueline window, a remarkable carving from the Age of Discovery.

The journey will conclude as we return to Lisbon, with a scheduled arrival at Praça Marque de Pombal approximately 9 hours after departure.
