Hacienda Doka Coffee Tour

Explore one of the largest coffee plantations in Costa Rica with a visit to Hacienda Doka. A coffee tasting is included, making this experience truly enjoyable.

Tour Details

If you are in the mood for a great cup of Costa Rican coffee, we will meet at the entrance of Hacienda Doka, situated at the foot of Poás Volcano, where the coffee flourishes with distinctive character. After an introductory briefing, we’ll begin our journey through one of the most significant coffee plantations in Costa Rica.

The visit starts with a coffee cocktail as we walk through the seedbeds. You will learn why Costa Rica has been legally cultivating 100% Arabica coffee since 1989. As we proceed through the plantation, we will explore the entire life cycle of coffee, from germination and nursery stages to transplanting and selective harvesting. The altitude of these volcanic soils and the local microclimates that influence how the coffee cherries ripen will also be discussed.

Next, we will visit the beneficio, the traditional coffee processing mill, which is recognized as National Heritage. Here, you will see pulping machines in action and learn about the processes of controlled fermentation, washing, and drying, whether through sun exposure or mechanical dryers.

The tour will continue at the roasting plant, where various roast profiles are developed: light roasts to emphasize floral notes, medium roasts for balance, and dark roasts for a fuller, richer body. This process skillfully blends science with craftsmanship.

A highlight of the tour is the unlimited tasting of freshly brewed coffee at the end. You will learn how to properly taste coffee, identifying its fragrance, aroma, acidity, body, and aftertaste in each sip.

Additionally, we will visit the butterfly garden, which showcases the remarkable biodiversity of the region. The experience concludes with a stop at the shop to observe another coffee roasting process and sample some delicious chocolate.

After approximately 1 hour, the visit will conclude, bringing this enriching experience to a close.
