Explore the volcanic wonders of Terceira and immerse yourself in the remarkable geological structures of the region. This journey will take us through the natural treasures of the Azores, including the volcanic caves of Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, and the intriguing fumaroles found at Furnas do Enxofre.

Volcanic Caves Excursion

Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel at the scheduled time, as we embark on a journey to the volcanic caves of Terceira in an off-road vehicle or a van. The drive showcases the lush forests and distinctive hydrangea fields that dot the landscape.

Venturing along lesser-known paths, we will reach the Guilherme Moniz crater, soaring at 640 meters. Here, we’ll encounter the island's notable geological features, namely the Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal. Inside these volcanic caves, we'll delve into their depths and observe the diverse Azorean flora thriving in this unique environment, including varieties of holly, moss, and laurel.

As we uncover the fascinating history behind the formation of these caves, you will be able to admire the stalactites and natural openings. A hidden pond adds an enchanting element to this exploration.

Next, we will tour the Furnas do Enxofre, known for its geothermal features, where fumaroles release sulphurous steam from beneath the crust. This is your opportunity to witness a natural spectacle that serves as a reminder of the Azores' volcanic background.

During our return journey, we'll traverse the island’s main roads, allowing you to soak in the beautiful landscapes of Terceira. After four hours of engaging with nature, we will conclude the excursion and return to your hotel.

Modifications to Itinerary

Due to ongoing maintenance, the Algar do Carvão is temporarily inaccessible. Consequently, our itinerary will be adjusted to include a visit to a lesser-known lava tube.
