This journey will take you through the natural beauty of the Azores, featuring the stunning volcanic caves such as Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, along with the intriguing fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre.

Day Trip to the Volcanic Caves

Your adventure begins with a pickup from your accommodation or a designated location in Angra do Heroísmo, setting off at the specified time in an off-road vehicle or a van, surrounded by lush forests and vibrant hydrangea fields that decorate the route.

We will navigate through lesser-known paths of Terceira, making several stops at hidden gems known only to our guides. Our journey leads us to the astonishing Guilherme Moniz crater, towering at 640 m (2,099 ft). Here, you will encounter some of the most significant geological features of the island: the Algar do Carvão and the Gruta do Natal. Within these volcanic caves, you'll have the chance to delve into their fascinating interiors, rich with the native Azorean flora including holly, moss, and laurel.

As we explore, you will learn about the history of these caves’ formations while admiring the stalactites and the unique cavities that adorn their surfaces, eventually arriving at a concealed pond that adds a touch of enchantment to your experience.

Our journey continues to the Furnas do Enxofre, renowned for its geothermal features, where fumaroles release sulphurous steam from the earth’s depths. Here, you'll observe firsthand this natural spectacle, a testament to the volcanic legacy of the Azores.

As we return to the vehicle, the main roads will provide a picturesque view of the landscapes of Terceira. After spending around 3 to 4 hours immersed in the natural environment, we will head back to your original meeting point or hotel.

Possible Adjustments to Itinerary

It is important to note that access to Algar do Carvão might be restricted occasionally due to maintenance or adverse weather. In these instances, we will adjust the itinerary, ensuring you still experience the wonders of a concealed lava tube for a complete volcanic adventure.
