Provence Roman History Tour
Description
The influence of the Roman Empire continues to be evident in the historical sites of Nîmes and the Pont du Gard. Embark on a journey through the remnants of ancient history with this Roman heritage tour of Provence.
Tour Overview
Your adventure will commence with a pickup at 41 Cours Jean Jaurès in Avignon, where you will meet your guide at the scheduled time. After approximately an hour of travel, you will arrive in Nîmes, a remarkable city with a rich Roman heritage.
A highlight of your visit will be the Arenas de Nîmes amphitheatre, the most significant Roman structure in the area. An English audio guide will be available for you to explore at your own pace. Like Rome's iconic Coliseum, this venue once hosted gladiator battles in its central arena, and it now serves as one of France's leading bullfighting arenas! Following your exploration, a brief stop will be made to view another renowned landmark, the Maison Carrée temple.
Your journey will then proceed to Pont du Gard, a superbly preserved Roman aqueduct in Provence. Here, you will have time to admire the structure leisurely or, if desired, visit the Pont du Gard Museum. This museum provides fascinating insights into the impressive engineering feats accomplished by the Romans millennia ago.
Before concluding the tour, we will visit Orange, another historic Roman city featuring two magnificent ancient structures from the 1st century BC, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The grandeur of its Roman Theatre is sure to captivate you!
We will then make our way back to Avignon, reaching the original meeting point approximately 8.5 hours after our departure.
