Baiona Private Tour
Description
Embark on a private exploration of Baiona, nestled in Galicia, where you’ll traverse the historic district and the scenic waterfront, taking in sights such as the majestic Monterreal Castle and the impressive Virgen de la Roca. This experience is accompanied by a dedicated English-speaking guide exclusively for your group.
Description
We will convene at Pozo da Aguada at the scheduled time to kick off our private journey through Baiona, a town steeped in rich heritage.
Your adventure will commence along the coastal promenade, where you’ll wander and soak in the breathtaking views of Mount Boi alongside the formidable Monterreal Castle, notable for its towering structures and ramparts, which now houses a luxurious Parador de Turismo Hotel.
As we continue, you will marvel at the monumental Virgen de la Roca, also known as Our Lady of the Rock, standing at 49 feet (15 meters) tall. Next, we’ll delve into the history with a visit to the residence of Pedro Madruga, a pivotal figure in Baiona’s past.
Throughout our walk, we'll unveil captivating narratives, including how the news of the Discovery of America reached Baiona via La Pinta, one of Christopher Columbus' vessels. This coastline was not only a harbor for messages from the Indies but also a target for invasions, including those led by notorious figures like the famed Francis Drake.
We will then make our way into the old quarter of Baiona, navigating its quaint streets and encountering significant landmarks such as the Ex Collegiate Church of Baiona, reflecting a Romanesque-Gothic architectural style, and the Church of Santa Liberata. Both churches are significant stops along the renowned Portuguese route of the Camino Santiago pilgrimage.
Our tour will culminate as we return to the promenade to view the statue of Alfonso IX, a monarch who played a vital role in enhancing Baiona's prominence. After approximately two hours of exploration, we will conclude our enriching journey.
