Univali Oceanographic Museum Tickets
Description
If you have a passion for marine life, this ticket grants you entry to the Univali Oceanographic Museum, a delightful experience suitable for visitors of all ages.
Reasons to Explore the Univali Oceanographic Museum
The ocean remains one of humanity's greatest enigmas, with numerous species still undiscovered by many. To unveil some of these aquatic beings and highlight their intriguing evolution, the Univali Oceanographic Museum (MOVI) was established in 1987 by the University of Valle de Itajai. This destination is essential for anyone visiting Balneario Piçarras.
Initially, upon its launch, the museum's collections were dedicated solely to research and educational initiatives, but the growing interest led to its opening for public visits by the end of 2015. Presently, the museum features thousands of specimens organized into seven thematic sections.
Today, MOVI ranks among Brazil's premier natural history institutions, boasting the largest oceanographic collection across the Americas and the third largest worldwide. Quite remarkable, isn’t it?
Exhibits at MOVI
The museum spans over 1000 square meters (approximately 10,800 square feet), housing more than 1400 exhibits arranged across seven themed areas, each distinguished by color:
- The Blue Wing - The origins of life and humanity's interaction with the sea: This section delves into the beginnings of life and displays fossils from various geological epochs of our planet.
- The Red Wing - Invertebrate marine life: Features coral and sponge skeletons, alongside live marine animals in aquariums.
- The Green Wing - Cartilaginous fishes: Highlights an array of sharks and rays, showcasing unique specimens, including terrestrial, oceanic, deep-sea, and threatened species.
- The Brown Wing - Bony fish: This area presents specimens from principal bony fish families, demonstrating the diversity of shapes and adaptations within each category.
- The Gray Wing - Marine reptiles: While this group encompasses 14 different species, the focus here is primarily on sea turtles.
- The Beige Wing - Marine birds: This zone offers an extensive exhibition of all species of penguins.
- The Black Wing - Marine mammals: Begins with the history of whaling and its commercial impact, particularly in Santa Catarina. The display includes various species of dolphins, whales, sea lions, and seals from South America, alongside manatees from Brazil’s northeastern region.
- Sensory Experience Room: Here, visitors can touch various preserved marine animal specimens, offering a tactile view of textures found in rays, sea lions, seahorses, and sharks, among others.
