Ancient Synagogue of Barcelona Tickets
Description
Exploring the Ancient Synagogue of Barcelona offers a deep dive into one of the most intriguing segments of Barcelona's past. An experience that shouldn't be missed!
Discover One of Europe's Oldest Synagogues
Sitting in the center of the Call, the historic Jewish quarter of Barcelona, the Ancient Synagogue is revered as one of Europe's oldest places of worship. This notable structure, with its foundations tracing back to the Roman era, has recently been uncovered and lovingly restored to function as a museum.
With this admission, you will understand that what lies within the Major Synagogue is more than mere architecture; it serves as a vibrant testament to the profound Jewish heritage of Barcelona. Your exploration will lead you through the medieval design that has withstand the test of time, in addition to engaging with a small museum annex that enriches the overall journey.
What secrets lie behind the robust walls of this significant site? What was life like for the Jewish community in Barcelona before 1391, when the synagogue was no longer in use? Such mysteries have been uncovered thanks to extensive work initiated in 1987 by medieval historian Jaume Riera i Sans, who pinpointed the precise location of the Major Synagogue, thus unveiling a forgotten chapter of Barcelona's narrative.
What Awaits You
- Exterior of the synagogue: You will encounter a building harboring layered early medieval architecture, with a central component dating back to the 13th century and adaptations made in the 17th century that saw the addition of upper levels. Access to the temple is granted from Marlet Street via a modest entrance.
- First chamber: Welcome to the hallway of the synagogue! After passing through the door and descending a few steps, you will arrive at this initial chamber. Beneath this staircase lies remnants of the Opus africanum, an ancient Roman building method that supports the medieval walls of the 13th century. A fragment of wall from this era can also be observed.
- Second chamber: Once you maneuver through the wall opening and descend further, you'll find yourself in the core of the medieval synagogue. This sacred area possesses an intriguing narrative. It is notable that members had designated seating, with their location reflecting individual social standing. On the southeast side, two large windows frame a replica of the Ark, also known as Aaron Hakodesh, where sacred Torah manuscripts were historically kept. At the rear of the chamber, a remarkable Menorah, donated by artist Ferrán Aguiló in 1957 in tribute to his lineage, stands out.
