Medieval Barcelona Tour
Description
Explore the secrets and stories of Barcelona's Medieval past. The Santa Maria del Mar church is just one of the many incredible sites you'll discover on this guided tour.
Medieval Barcelona
This fascinating guided tour begins at the Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran square, situated at the foot of the equestrian statue of Ramon Berenguer III. Here, you will learn about the Roman origins of Barcino, the historical town from which modern Barcelona developed.
From the Plaça de l'Àngel, we will proceed to the intersection of Via Laietana and Calle Argentería. At the end of Calle Argentería lies the Santa Maria del Mar church, a medieval temple that became famous due to Ildefonso Falcones' bestseller, “La catedral del mar” (Cathedral of the Sea).
Continuing along Calle de Santa María, we will uncover the history of the Fossar de les Moreres, a square that pays homage to those who lost their lives during the Siege of Barcelona in 1714. Just a short distance away is the Paseo del Born, a historic medieval road that culminates at the Centro Cultural El Born.
Our journey proceeds along the palace-lined street of Calle Montcada, where we will encounter notable structures, including the Palau Dalmases. Here, you can admire Gothic Catalan architecture, complete with mythological sculptural details of Neptune. On the same street, the architecture of the Picasso Museum awaits, housed within another striking palatial building.
The final segment of the tour will take us to the outside of the Marcús chapel. In the 7th century, local bourgeois Bernat Marcús contributed significantly to this area by founding a hospital and cemetery. We will conclude the tour near the Plaça de la Llana square, nearly completing a full circle.
