Details of the Literary Excursion
We will gather at the Plaza de San Nicolás at the scheduled time. Once we are set to go, our literary excursion through Barranquilla will commence, inviting you to explore the enchantment of Colombian literature.
Our journey will begin with a visit to the Church of San Nicolás de Tolentino, a former cathedral with a history spanning over 300 years. Following this, we'll stroll by the historic site known as Sodería La Estrella, a venue frequented by Barranquilla's intellectual elite since the early 20th century.
Next, we will pause in front of the old premises of the newspaper El Heraldo, where discussions will revolve around Gabriel García Márquez, the distinguished Colombian author and Nobel Prize winner in Literature. This was the location where he penned and published his column La Jirafa, later compiled by the French scholar Jacques Gilard.
Continuing our exploration, we will arrive at the residence of Ramon Vinyes, a Catalan writer recognized for his significance in the Colombian literary landscape. His influence was acknowledged by García Márquez in his renowned novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, where he is depicted as the "wise Catalan" and "the man who had read everything."
As we uncover the secrets of the first esoteric library in Barranquilla, the insights of Abraham Zacarías will guide us to the Iglesia San José, the very place where García Márquez completed a portion of his secondary education.
Our literary adventure will conclude at this final stop after a captivating 2-hour journey.
