Barranquilla Universal Cemetery Tour
Description
On this tour of the Universal Cemetery, we’ll explore Barranquilla’s history through the tombstones and symbols found in the city’s largest cemetery.
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Barranquilla and head to the historic Universal Cemetery, the largest cemetery in the city. Along the way, we’ll reveal how commerce, migration, and modernity shaped the history of Barranquilla and this sacred place.
Upon arrival, we’ll pass through the gates of the Universal Cemetery, a peaceful space founded in the 19th century to welcome those excluded by the Catholic Church. Did you know that, in its early days, it was popularly known as the Cemetery of the Poor? Curiously, today many people call it the Cemetery of the Millionaires. Some members of Barranquilla’s elite are buried here.
Once inside, we’ll stroll among its ornate mausoleums, which contrast with some simple and humble graves that speak to social hierarchies and different beliefs.
Throughout the tour, we’ll discover the graves of entrepreneurs, artists, writers, musicians, and politicians. In this way, we’ll see how these figures helped shape Barranquilla’s identity. At each stop, we’ll uncover biographies and anecdotes. What stories of success began and ended here? Who still receives flowers as if time had not passed?
Finally, after 2 hours of touring, we’ll say our goodbyes as we drop you off at your hotel, where the experience will come to an end.
