Peniscola Tour
Description
Discover one of the stunning towns along the Costa del Azahar with this excursion to Peniscola from Benicassim. Enjoy a guided exploration of its historic district, visit the Templar castle, and uncover the significance of this location in relation to the Papacy.
Excursion to Peniscola
Our adventure begins at 9 am at the Tourist Office in Benicassim, where we'll board a minibus for the 40-minute journey to Peniscola.
Upon arrival, we'll embark on a guided walking tour through the charming old town. The first highlight will be the ancient artillery park, allowing us to admire the exterior of Peniscola Castle. This impressive structure was constructed by the Knights Templar during the late 1200s.
Next, we will enter the castle and delve into the fascinating history of one of its most notable residents: Pedro Martínez de Luna, also known as Pope Luna. We'll explore the reasons behind his exile in Peniscola and why many in the Catholic Church regarded him as an antipope.
Afterward, we'll visit the bufador, a natural hole in the rocks that allows the sea to surge through, creating a captivating spectacle. Can you hear the ocean's mighty roar?
Continuing our stroll, we'll explore more of Peniscola's picturesque streets, taking in notable landmarks like the Casa de las Conchas (House of Seashells) and the church of Santa Maria. Our final stop will be the Sea Museum, where we'll discover insights into the town's rich maritime heritage.
