Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Tour
Description
The Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp stands as a significant historical site in Berlin, offering visitors a profound journey into the grim realities of the Nazi era.
Tour Details
The experience begins at the designated meeting point in central Berlin, from where we will head towards Oranienburg, the site of the camp. This transit highlights the unsettling proximity of the camp to daily civilian life.
Upon arrival at the memorial, we'll explore the essential areas of the site with a knowledgeable guide. Many parts of the original structure were dismantled post-closure, and an informed narrative greatly enhances the understanding of this harrowing place.
We will proceed to the roll call yard, a location where prisoners were subjected to prolonged standing regardless of the elements, and the barracks, showcasing the dire overcrowding and living conditions faced by the inmates. Additionally, we will visit the prison and punishment cells, designated for individuals deemed "special prisoners" by the regime, as well as the infirmary and the autopsy room, sites of forced medical experimentation. The tour culminates at Station Z, the area for executions and cremations, where the guide will discuss the grim final measures taken.
Throughout the journey, the guide will recount poignant details that vividly illustrate the historical context, such as the practice of compelling inmates to march up to 90 kilometers (56 miles) daily for military boot testing. We will also visit the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, dedicated to commemorating those who perished here, along with insights into the camp's subsequent use by the Soviet NKVD after 1945.
The tour lasts around 5 to 6 hours, concluding with our return to Berlin.
