Brussels Guided Walking Tour
Description
Join us on an exploratory walking adventure through Brussels, as we navigate from Saint-Géry to Sainte-Catherine, discovering the rich medieval history and remarkable monuments of this vibrant city. Prepare to be enchanted!
Tour Overview
Our journey begins at the iconic Grand Place, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its stunning baroque architecture and the intricate designs of its guild houses. What better starting point for a walking exploration of Brussels?
Next, we will visit the monument to Everard t'Serclaes, an important figure from the city’s 14th-century liberation movement. Local lore suggests that touching this statue will bring good fortune, so be sure to give it a gentle rub!
Continuing on, we will reach Manneken Pis, a famed 17th-century urban sculpture rich in local lore and cultural significance. A brief walk will bring us to the Church of Our Lady of Good Help, a site historically frequented by devoted pilgrims.
Our route then leads us along the historic Boulevard Anspach, a key element of the city’s 19th-century urban renewal, initiated when the River Senne was covered to address pollution issues. Did you know it was once recognized as one of the most contaminated rivers in Europe?
We will arrive at Saint-Géry Island, the birthplace of Brussels, where we’ll explore the medieval development of the city. A highlight will be the Saint-Géry Market and our interaction with the Zinneke Pis, a quirky statue showcasing a dog in a playful pose.
Next, we will move toward Place Sainte-Catherine, which was once a bustling inland port, before venturing into the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, recognized as trailblazers in European covered shopping architecture.
As we pass by the historic Café La Mort Subite and the Delirium Brewery, we’ll delve into the Belgian beer culture and discover how the country has developed over 1,500 unique beer types. Continuing our ascent, we will head to the upper city to admire the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula, a prime example of Brabantine Gothic style.
Our adventure takes us through Brussels Park, offering views of the Royal Palace and Place Royale, the city’s political core. We will conclude our exploration in the area surrounding the Coudenberg Palace, enriched by the presence of the Art Nouveau Musical Instruments Museum, the Magritte Museum, and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
After approximately 2.5 hours of immersive exploration, we’ll bid farewell at Place Royale.
