Atomium's Historical Background
The Atomium, a fusion of the terms atom and aluminum, was designed for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. This monumental structure symbolizes nine atoms of an iron crystal enlarged 165 billion times. Belgian engineer André Waterkeyn envisioned the Atomium as an emblem of scientific advancement in the mid-20th century. Its nine spheres are interconnected by tubes housing escalators, and the exterior is finished with stainless steel to endure the weather.
With an impressive annual visitor count exceeding 60,000, the Atomium holds the title of the most visited monument in Belgium.
