Battle of the Bulge Day Trip
Description
On this day trip from Brussels, the journey takes us to the southern region of Belgium to explore the history of the Battle of the Bulge, one of the significant battles during the Second World War. This tour includes visits to the Bastogne War Museum and the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neuville.
Tour Details
Meet at the designated time at number 18 of the Boulevard de Berlaimont; from here, we will embark towards the south of Belgium.
After approximately 1.5 hours of travel, our first stop will be at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neuville-en-Condroz. This site features a chapel and a memorial, providing insights into the American soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of the Bulge.
During our visit, we'll take a reflective walk among the gravestones while discussing the battle's strategic significance, which occurred between December 16, 1944, and January 25, 1945. This confrontation marked one of the major offensives by the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of Nazi Germany, and we will uncover its impact on the latter stages of the Second World War.
Our next destination is Bastogne, crucial to the Battle of the Bulge's strategy. We'll explore Place McAuliffe, named after the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the Siege of Bastogne, where a Sherman M3 tank, used in the battle, is displayed.
After visiting, we'll proceed to the nearby Battle of the Bulge Monument, a striking star-shaped tribute to the American soldiers who fought in this significant battle.
Adjacent to this memorial lies the Bastogne War Museum, where we will have a guided tour showcasing vehicles, uniforms, and weapons from the 1940s. The museum also houses a restaurant, the Bistrot de la Paix, where you will have two hours allotted for lunch.
After our lunch break, we will visit the German military cemetery and the Foy trenches located on the outskirts of Bastogne.
Our day will conclude as we return to the meeting point in Brussels, wrapping up this comprehensive 11-hour experience.
