Description
Depart from Budapest for an 8-hour full-day excursion to the Danube Bend, renowned for its enchanting landscapes. This trip will lead you through Esztergom, Visegrád, and Szentendre, three charming towns that showcase the beauty surrounding the capital. It’s an ideal opportunity to explore the outskirts of Budapest during your stay.
Danube Bend Day Trip: Exploring Esztergom, Visegrád & Szentendre
Gather near the parliament building in Budapest and embark on a comfortable coach heading north towards Esztergom. This historical city served as Hungary’s capital from the 10th to 13th centuries and is a significant site for the Roman Catholic Church, featuring the grand Esztergom Basilica, the largest cathedral in Hungary. With the guidance of your knowledgeable English-speaking tour leader, you’ll have the chance to visit this magnificent neoclassical church and enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Danube River and southern Slovakia from Castle Hill. The segment in Esztergom is approximately one hour.
Your next destination is Visegrád, celebrated for its medieval citadel situated on an elevated slope, as well as the summer palace of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. En route, you will pass by the remnants of the impressive Visegrád Castle and take in the scenic vistas of the Danube Bend. Following the guided portion, you’ll have around an hour to explore the town at your leisure.
After enjoying a lovely lunch, reboard the bus and travel to Szentendre, also known as the Artists’ Village. Accompany your guide in an hour-long walking tour through the Old Town, followed by some free time to browse through local souvenir shops or visit its acclaimed museums.

Currently, owing to low water levels in the Danube River, the return from Szentendre to Budapest will occur by bus until September 6, 2026, rather than by boat. The overall itinerary and schedule of the day trip remain consistent.
