Entrance to the Budapest Parliament
The Budapest Parliament, formally recognized as the Hungarian Parliament Building, is among Hungary’s most significant and recognizable structures. Its dramatic architecture not only captivates visitors but also reflects its deep historical and political importance. It majestically towers along the banks of the Danube River in Kossuth Square.
Construction of the Parliament occurred between 1885 and 1902, with plans laid out by the Hungarian architect Imre Steindl, who drew inspiration from the Neo-Gothic style of London's Palace of Westminster while incorporating Renaissance and Baroque features. It ranks as the third-largest parliament globally and stands as the tallest building in Budapest, sharing this distinction with St. Stephen's Basilica.
With your ticket, you will be able to explore the interior of this prestigious building via a comprehensive audio guide in English. Upon entry, your journey begins with a climb up the grand staircase, adorned with rich red carpets, elaborate lighting fixtures, and opulent golden decor.
Next, the route leads you through the Assembly Hall, the venue for vital legislative discussions, and into the Dome Room, where the Holy Crown of Hungary is on display. The audio guide offers in-depth narratives about the sights you encounter, including the Old Upper House and the Congress of Deputies.
After a 45-minute exploration inside the parliament, you have the option to continue your journey in the vicinity of the building, guided by the audio commentary. Gain insights into the vibrant history of Kossuth Square and observe important landmarks, such as the statue of Ferenc Rákóczi, the Memorial for Victims of the German Occupation, and the Memorial of National Cohesion. The guide will share intriguing facts about these locations, including the tragic events of Bloody Thursday and the significance behind each memorial.
Adjacent to the Parliament, the Lapidarium features a curated collection of stone carvings and sculptures, allowing you to appreciate the tales behind the statues located throughout the square.
This exploratory tour of the parliament's external surroundings, supplemented by an audio guide, typically spans 30 to 45 minutes. Please be aware that following the tour, independent exploration of the premises will not be permitted.
