Explore the Great Budapest Synagogue
Commonly referred to as the Dohány Street Synagogue, this building stands as both the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest globally. Its inauguration took place in 1859, coinciding with a flourishing Jewish community in Hungary.
Designed in the Moorish-Byzantine style by architect Ludwig Förster, the synagogue features an exterior marked by striking bulbous domes and distinctive red and yellow brick patterns. The lavishly decorated interior accommodates nearly 3000 worshippers, making it a breathtaking space.
Your tickets to the Great Synagogue grant you access to a 45-minute guided tour of this vital city landmark. It is situated in the heart of what is now the Jewish Quarter, an area that historically served as the Budapest Ghetto during the Holocaust and World War II.
The complex also includes the Heroes' Temple, a cemetery, and the Tree of Life Memorial, which serve as a poignant tribute to the victims of that tragic era. Notably, it is the only Jewish graveyard situated within a synagogue's grounds, memorializing those who perished in the ghetto.
Visiting the Dohány Street Synagogue allows you not only to appreciate its architectural grandeur but also to embark on a profound exploration of the history and resilience of Budapest's Jewish community.
After your guided tour, enjoy another 45 minutes of free time to further investigate the Great Synagogue at your leisure.
