Colonial Churches of Buenos Aires Free Tour
Description
On this complimentary tour exploring the colonial churches in Buenos Aires, we will explore four significant Catholic temples that have influenced the history of the Argentine capital.
Tour Overview
At the designated time, we will congregate at the intersection of Bolivar and Adolfo Alsina streets, marking the commencement of our complimentary tour of the colonial churches in Buenos Aires.
Our journey begins as we venture into the Monserrat neighborhood to locate the Church of San Ignacio de Loyola. This temple, constructed in adobe in 1675, invites us to admire its German baroque style and to explore its interior, which features exquisite colonial-style altarpieces.
Next, we will proceed to the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco de Asis, established in 1754. We will pause to admire its neo-baroque facade, which is adorned with a tympanum showcasing statues of St. Francis, Christopher Columbus, and Dante Alighieri.
Our following destination will be the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de la Defensa y la Reconquista de Buenos Aires. Erected by the Dominican Order in 1751, this church withstood the English invasions of 1806 and 1807.
Here, we will note the preserved marks of cannonballs on the left tower, along with the display of British flags as historical artifacts. In the courtyard, we will encounter the mausoleum of Manuel Belgrano, a key figure in Argentina's fight for independence.
Our final stop will be at the Church of Nuestra Señora de Belén, known as the Church of San Pedro González Telmo, located in the lively San Telmo neighborhood. Inside, we will find an 18th-century statue of San Pedro Telmo, the patron saint of sailors, along with a pulpit gifted by Manuel Belgrano himself.
As our 2.5-hour tour concludes, we will part ways but not before sharing valuable suggestions for enjoying the local antique shops, cafes, and vibrant street art of San Telmo.
