Mama Antula Tour
Description
Experience a captivating walking tour in Buenos Aires and delve into the life of Mama Antula, the first recognized saint of Argentina, as we trace her remarkable journey through the city.
What Awaits You
Are you familiar with the narrative of Mama Antula, the first saint from Argentina? Embark on this enlightening walk around Buenos Aires as we explore her enduring influence. The adventure begins at Lorea Square.
Your first stop will be the Our Lady of Mercy Basilica, where the remains of Maria Antonia de Paz y Figueroa, affectionately known as Mama Antula, are laid to rest. Pope Francis canonized this significant 18th-century figure on February 11, 2024, honoring her as the first Argentinian woman to be sanctified as a saint.
As we navigate through the capital, we’ll uncover her rich history and impact. We will pass the Church of the Arcangel Michael en route to Mayo Plaza, home to the iconic Casa Rosada and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires. Within this cathedral, a portrait of Mama Antula can be found. Although depicted in a habit, it is important to note that Mama Antula was a consecrated laywoman and the founder of the Daughters of the Divine Savior.
While in Mayo Plaza, we will admire the facade of the Buenos Aires Cabildo. Following this, our path leads to the Otto Wulff building, another historical site linked to Mama Antula's legacy, which we will explore together.
In conclusion, after 2.5 hours of discovery, we will arrive at Our Lady of Montserrat Parish, culminating our tour in front of the Museum of the Holy House of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. An interesting tidbit: this establishment was founded through her efforts!
