Guided Tour of Catania
Description
Embark on a guided exploration of Catania, where the story, artistry, and traditions of the city await your discovery. As you navigate through its delightful alleyways, you'll encounter a rich tapestry of historic landmarks that tell the tale of its ancient and modern journey.
Tour Overview
We will commence at the appointed time in Piazza dell'Università to initiate our guided exploration of Catania. Let’s begin our adventure!
Initially, you will learn about the birth of the city alongside significant natural disasters that have impacted its evolution, including the notorious lava flow of 1669 and the devastating earthquake of 1693 that struck the Val di Noto region.
Next, we will stroll towards the storied Piazza del Duomo and the famed Elephant Fountain, where the well-known elephant, Liotru, awaits. What mystical tales surround this beloved symbol? This tour will unravel those secrets for you!
The journey continues as we explore the Catania Cathedral and the courtyard of the Town Hall, both of which serve as living memorials to Agatha of Sicily, the city’s patron saint. Following a crossing at the Fontana dell'Amenano (Amenano Fountain), you'll find yourself swept up in the vibrant atmosphere of the local fish market, where the lively scents and sounds of vendors enrich your experience. Should you wish, you’ll have the option to acquire a piece of Sicilian culture from this market.
Transitioning from the bustling market, we will enter the serene Via dei Crociferi, recognized as Catania's sacred thoroughfare and a prime representation of Baroque architecture. Here, you will see how faint traces connect us with the Catania that existed prior to the devastating earthquake of 1693.
Subsequently, we will return to Piazza dell'Università, taking in the grandeur of majestic Baroque structures along the way. The ornately decorated lampposts will guide us into the intriguing realm of Sicilian myths. Our tour will culminate at the Roman Amphitheatre of Catania, a site that marks the boundary of the medieval city, shielded by its ancient walls. Its unique black volcanic stone will reveal to you the distinctive character of this monumental site!
As our exploration concludes, we will bid farewell after an enriching guided experience lasting 2 hours and 15 minutes.
