Goñicutac, Astobamba & Warawtampu Day Trip
Your journey begins at 7 am with a pickup from your place of stay in Cerro de Pasco. We will travel toward the Chaupihuaranga Valley, making our way to the quaint village of Rocco. Here, an approximately 1 hour and 30-minute trek will take you through the valley to the Goñicutac Archaeological Complex, once home to the Yaros people.
This ancient community thrived in the citadel during the 13th century, exercising dominion over the Pasco and Huánuco regions prior to the Incas' arrival. As we traverse its narrow streets, lively plazas, and winding pathways, you will uncover the sacred history of this area, along with the innovative hydraulic systems that sustained its water supply. Additionally, we'll visit the Temple of the Moon, renowned for the sacrifices made in reverence to this celestial entity.
Our next stop will be Yanahuanca, where you'll enjoy some leisure time for lunch. Afterward, we will resume our exploration of various archaeological sites scattered throughout the valley.
Just 3 miles from Yanahuanca lies the archaeological sites of Astobamba and Warawtampu. Connected by an Inca-built bridge spanning the river that separates them, these sites are integral to the Inca Trail leading from Cusco. At Astobamba, you'll witness pre-Inca structures crafted by the Wari civilization, known for their strength and influence—its name translates to "City of Punishment" in Quechua.
Next, we will visit Warawtampu, where several structures from the Inca era await. Notable sites include the Incawasi—the Inca Palace—and the Inca Fountain, vital for the community's water accessibility. The complex also boasts stunning tiered waterfalls, with a breathtaking cascade extending nearly 2 miles (3 kilometers).
Concluding this memorable day, we will head back to Cerro de Pasco, with an estimated return to your accommodation around 6 pm.
