Cork Harbour Boat Cruise
Description
Embark on a fascinating cruise through Cork Harbour, recognized as the second-largest natural harbour globally. Witness breathtaking landscapes while delving into the rich historical significance of the area.
Cork Harbour Boat Cruise
We'll convene at the specified time at Custom House Quay in Cork City, where our vessel will be waiting for us to board. Positioned at the estuary of the River Lee, Cork Harbour stands out as the world's second-largest natural harbour, following Sydney Harbour.
As our journey commences aboard the Cailín Óir ferry, we’ll relish panoramic views from the upper deck, allowing us to appreciate the splendid sights of Cork Harbour and its surroundings. As we navigate the waters, the harbour presents a picturesque scene filled with remarkable islands, vibrant homes, and captivating views of Cork City.
During the cruise, we will uncover the rich heritage of Cork Harbour, which has witnessed significant historical milestones. For instance, countless Irish emigrants traversed these waters during the Great Famine, and the RMS Titanic anchored here for the last time before its tragic sinking just days later.
As we progress along the River Lee and through the Lough, we will pass quaint villages such as Passage West, Monkstown, and Ringaskiddy. Key landmarks include Blackrock Castle, initially established as a coastal defense in the 16th century to safeguard the harbour against pirates. Despite suffering two fires in its past, it now operates as an observatory, visitor facility, and restaurant.
Next, we will glide by Haulbowline Island, where we’ll explore its long-standing role as a military base dating back to 1602. Originally fortified for the British Army, it currently serves as the headquarters for the Irish Naval Service. An interesting detail: this island is recognized as the birthplace of the first yacht club worldwide, the Royal Cork Yacht Club.
Our route will also take us past Fota Island, which is home to Ireland’s sole wildlife park and the historic Fota House and Gardens, along with a luxurious five-star hotel that includes a golf course and spa.
To enhance our experience, we will enjoy exceptional views while savoring hot beverages and snacks, available for purchase from the onboard kiosk and coffee dock—what more could you desire?
After two hours of exploration, we will return to Custom House Quay, concluding our tour. Slán!
