Tenerife Vineyard & Winery Exploration

Following your pickup from a designated location in the southern region of Tenerife, our adventure will take us to a local farm, where you'll explore the intricacies of cultivating the iconic fruit of the Canary Islands: the banana.

As we wander through the estate, you will learn how banana cultivation has thrived since antiquity, along with the various ways this cherished fruit is utilized. After touring the banana plantation, satisfy your palate with a tasting of some tantalizing dishes. Truly a treat!

Next, we'll journey to the charming town of Vilaflor, where a visit to Lagar de Chasna winery awaits. Here, you will delve into the mysteries of the island's winemaking process, culminating in a sampling of 5 Canarian wines, enhancing your ability to identify the subtle flavors that characterize these unique beverages.

To enrich the tasting experience, a flavorful selection of traditional Canarian dishes will be served: papas arrugadas accompanied by green and red mojo sauces, almogrote toast (a local spread), chorizo toast, and goat cheese.

Once we've enjoyed our meal, we will return to our original meeting point, concluding this 4- to 5-hour journey.

Viticultural History of the Canary Islands

During the 14th century, European vines found their way to the Canary Islands, thanks to missionaries who arrived before the Spanish colonization. By the mid-16th century, winemaking had developed into a key industry, with British traders facilitating the export of the famous sweet Malvasia wine to Europe and America. Despite the adversities posed by wars and volcanic activities, the wine trade in the Canary Islands flourished for an impressive 300 years.

The narrative shifted notably in the 1860s with the arrival of the phylloxera pest, which devastated vineyards across Europe. Remarkably, the Canary Islands remained unaffected, preserving some of the oldest grapevine varieties found globally.

In modern times, particularly on Tenerife, the Islands are recognized for their production of outstanding wines. The combination of non-grafted vines, rich volcanic soil, and varying microclimates contributes to the unique character of wines ranging from crisp whites to hearty reds. Along the diverse landscapes of Tenerife, from coastal areas to the elevated mountain slopes housing some of Europe's highest vineyards, the island's winemaking heritage continues to thrive.

Harvest Period

The Canary Islands boast one of the most extended harvest seasons globally, spanning from July to November. During this time, the visit to one of the wineries will be substituted with a tour of an aloe vera and fruit farm.
