Guided Tour of Cuenca
Description
Guided Tour of Cuenca
After being picked up from your hotel, your journey begins in the old town of Cuenca, recognized as one of the largest and most well-preserved historical city centers in Ecuador, designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The guided tour starts at the Plaza de San Sebastián, a tranquil square located at the western edge of the colonial center, where the 19th-century Church of San Sebastián is situated. You will then visit the Museum of Modern Art, housed in the historic Casa de la Temperancia, and explore various exhibitions of contemporary art featuring both local and international artists.
As you explore the historic city center, you will gain insight into the daily life of Cuenca's residents, with a stop at the bustling San Francisco market. The open-air flower market at the Plaza de las Flores is a feast for the senses, displaying vibrant colors and captivating aromas.
In Abdón Calderón Park, breathe in the fresh air while admiring the impressive view of the 16th-century Baroque-style Old Cathedral alongside the New Cathedral. Inside the New Cathedral, see the magnificent gold-leaf altar and exquisite pink marble floors imported from Carrara.
Your tour will continue at a factory specializing in traditional toquilla straw hats, commonly known as Panama hats, despite their Ecuadorian roots. Learn about the history and artistry of hat weaving, a craft recognized as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Next, make your way to the banks of the River Tomebamba, where you can view the colonial "hanging houses" perched above the river and the well-known Puento Roto, or Broken Bridge. To conclude this immersive tour of Ecuador's cultural capital, you will ascend to the Turi viewpoint for stunning panoramas of Cuenca.
After 4 hours of engaging exploration, you will be taken back to your hotel.
