Description

Prepare to mark off one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World from your list. By obtaining tickets to Machu Picchu, you will unveil the intriguing stone legacy of the Inca civilization, set high among the clouds of the Peruvian Andes.

Reasons to Explore Machu Picchu

Did you realize that Machu Picchu was shrouded in secrecy, remaining unknown to the outside world until its “rediscovery” in 1911? It rests on a rocky outcrop that unites the Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains. Constructed in the 15th century under the direction of Inca Pachacútec, a formidable leader who transformed the Empire, it is truly remarkable.

This site is strategically located at the boundary between the Andes and the Amazon, aligned perfectly with celestial bodies, showcasing a remarkable achievement in Andean architecture and spirituality.

Today, Machu Picchu stands as a representation not only of Inca civilization but also a hallowed site where the stones seem to breathe life. As you roam its plazas, temples, and terraced farms, you are not merely observing ruins; you step through an administrative, agricultural, and religious hub that has transcended both gravity and time.

Selecting Your Circuit

To safeguard this cultural treasure, entry to Machu Picchu is organized into three distinct circuits, each offering unique paths. Depending on availability, visitors may choose one of these options. Here’s a brief overview of the available routes:

Circuit 1: Panoramic Exploration

  • Route 1B – Upper Terrace: This route lasts approximately 1.5 hours, featuring a 15-minute uphill walk to the Upper Platform, passing the Kallanka ruins. The view from here offers a unique panorama of Machu Picchu.
  • Route 1C – Inti Punku (Sun Gate): This path follows the final segment of the Inca Trail to the ancient primary entrance, with a gentle climb of 45 minutes and a 30-minute descent boasting stunning views.
  • Route 1D – Inca Bridge: A tranquil, less frequented path that leads to the bold engineering of the Incas, taking around 1 hour to traverse.

Circuit 2: The Iconic Experience

  • Route 2A – Full Classic Route: This is the favorite among travelers, covering much of the archaeological site and providing the classic photograph of Machu Picchu, along with an exclusive descent to the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Rock, and the Hall of Mirrors. Duration: 2.5 hours.
  • Route 2B – Lower Terrace: Similar to the above route, it winds through agricultural terraces where llamas often graze. Once inside the citadel, this option remains on the upper path and passes the Inca Quarry, a historical stone-extraction site. Duration: 2.5 hours.

Circuit 3: Focus on Archaeology

  • Route 3B – Royal Route: Ideal for those who prefer to avoid the heights yet wish to appreciate significant architectural elements, such as the Royal Tomb and the Temple of the Condor. This route lasts between 2 to 2.5 hours, mainly through the lower part of the site, suitable for individuals with mobility challenges. Note that this route does not provide the classic photographic opportunity from the upper tier.
  • Route 3C – Gran Caverna: An extensive circuit away from the usual paths. It covers the lower areas of the citadel and includes a rigorous hike to the Temple of the Moon, situated on Huayna Picchu mountain. This route does not feature panoramic views or the iconic photo and takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete.
  • Route 3D – Huchuy Picchu Mountain: A hike lasting 2 to 3 hours leads to the summit of Huchuy Picchu Mountain. It presents an easier option compared to the previous choice, granting good views of Machu Picchu from a lower elevation.
