Machu Pitumarka Day Trip
At 8 am, our team will meet you at your accommodation in Cusco and begin the drive southward towards the district of Pitumarca. Here, you will find the archaeological site of Machu Pitumarka, positioned at an impressive elevation of 11,370 feet (3,465 meters). This site served as both an administrative and religious hub for the mysterious Canchis culture.
From its vantage point, the Canchis managed access to the valley, although they ultimately could not withstand the powerful Incas, who took control of the area. The significance of Machu Pitumarka as a transit point is underscored by its mention in historical narratives, including those by the noted historian Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
Throughout our exploration, we will assess the three distinct sectors of the site. The first sector features six rectangular constructions known as pircas. Ascending to the second sector, guests can revel in stunning views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, which towers at 21,000 feet (6,400 meters).
The itinerary proceeds to the third sector, situated in the lowest area of the complex, which showcases modest structures likely used for habitation during the Inca era.
Upon completing our tour of Machu Pitumarka, we will commence our return to Cusco. En route, a visit to the stunning Colonial Church of the Immaculate Conception of Checacupe is planned. This striking adobe structure features significant relics and an opulent interior.
We will then pass the Colonial Bridge of Checacupe, constructed in the 17th century, on our way to Huaro. In this charming town, we will appreciate the Church of St. John the Baptist, renowned for its beautiful paintings by the celebrated Cusquenian artist, Tadeo Escalante.
Finally, we will return to Cusco, arriving at your hotel by approximately 5 pm.
