Machu Pitumarka Day Trip
Your journey begins at 8 am with a pick-up from your accommodation in Cusco, followed by a scenic drive south toward the district of Pitumarca. Here, you will find the astonishing archaeological site of Machu Pitumarka, perched at an impressive altitude of 11,370 feet (3,465 metres). This site served as a vital administrative and spiritual center for the largely unknown but fascinating Canchis culture.
From this elevated position, the Canchis were responsible for regulating access to the valley; however, their efforts ultimately could not deter the Incas from conquering the region and establishing their dominion. Notably, Machu Pitumarka was recognized as a transit point of significant importance, as noted in the accounts of historians, including Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
During the visit, participants will navigate through the three distinct areas that comprise the site. The initial area consists of six rectangular edifices known as pircas. Participants will then transition to the second area, where they can take in the awe-inspiring views of the snow-clad Ausangate Mountain, which soars to a height of 21,000 feet (6,400 metres).
The exploration will proceed to the third area, situated in the lowest section of the site. This area features small structures that likely served as residential spaces during the Inca era.
Post-exploration of Machu Pitumarka, the return trip to Cusco will commence. En route, there's a stop planned at the colonial church of the Immaculate Conception of Checacupe. This architectural gem, constructed from adobe, is home to significant relics and showcases exquisite interior decorations.
Next, travelers will pass over the colonial bridge of Checacupe, built in the 17th century, before stopping in Huaro. Here, they will view the Church of St. John the Baptist, renowned for its artistic contributions by Cusquenian painter Tadeo Escalante.
Finally, the excursion will conclude upon arrival back in Cusco, with drop-off at your hotel expected around 5 pm.
