Vitcos Day Trip
Description
Description
Delve into the rich heritage of the Inca civilization by exploring a significant ceremonial site close to Cusco on this enlightening day trip to Vitcos. This experience promises to transport you back in time as you visit an archaeological treasure.
Itinerary
Your journey starts with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at 2 am, after which we will set off towards the region of Vilcabamba. The early departure is truly rewarding! As we travel, we will pass through the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas and navigate the breathtaking Abra Malaga Route, with its peaks soaring to an impressive 14,160 feet (4,316 meters). Following this, we'll descend into the Lucumayo Valley and cross the Vilcanota River via the majestic Chaullay Bridge.
Upon reaching the village of Huancacalle, you'll have some leisure time to enjoy the breakfast you’ve packed. Subsequently, we will embark on a hike toward the Vitcos archaeological complex, which is historically significant as the site of the assassination of the ruler Manco Inca II. As we revel in the breathtaking vistas of the Vilcabamba valley located at 8,860 feet (2,700 meters) above sea level, we will delve into the intriguing history that surrounds this enigmatic site.
At Vitcos, you will encounter its characteristic pink stone structures, earning it the alternative name Rosaspata. We will explore its three distinct sectors, which comprise the central square, ceremonial structures, and the Wanca, a revered area for the valley’s residents. A notable feature of this excursion includes the White Rock, a stone etched with symbols of the Inca Cross or Chakana.
Following our exploration, we will reboard the bus and pass by Lucma, where you can admire the colonial Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, recognized for its Baroque architecture. Historians suggest that this church was constructed over an ancient Inca oratory, utilizing materials from the archaeological site of Incahuarakana. You will also observe its bell tower along with captivating mural artworks.
To conclude our trip, we will make a stop at a local restaurant where you can enjoy lunch at your own pace before we return to Cusco, arriving back at your hotel by approximately 9 pm.
