Caceres: A City of 3 Cultures Free Walking Tour
Description
Explore the captivating fusion of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian influences in Cáceres, a gem among the cities of Extremadura, as you embark on this complimentary walking tour!
Cáceres: A Tapestry of Three Cultures
This free exploration begins at Plaza de Santa María in Cáceres, leading us deep into the old town where we will reveal the profound legacies shaped by Muslims, Jews, and Christians in this UNESCO World Heritage site.
We commence our journey by admiring significant Christian sites, specifically the Concatedral de Santa María (Saint Mary Cathedral) and the San Francisco Javier Church. The remarkable white towers of the latter stand out as one of the city's most iconic visuals.
As we meander through the streets, you will encounter a variety of historic palaces, including the Golfines de Abajo, the Carvajal, and the Toledo-Moctezuma. It's intriguing to note that one of these once belonged to the daughter of Moctezuma II, the Aztec emperor—showcasing its fascinating past.
Nearby, we will stroll through the former aljama de Cáceres, the Jewish quarter. Our adventure then continues into the realm of local gastronomy, as we explore traditional dishes such as migas, changaina, and the delicious Iberian ham.
Next, we will visit the Plaza de San Jorge, undoubtedly one of the city's most beautiful squares. During our walk, you’ll also catch sight of the spectacular Torres de la Hierba and Bujaco, stunning edifices from the Andalusian period.
Our exploration will then lead us towards the Plaza Mayor, where we will immerse ourselves in Cáceres' medieval past, flanked by elegant 16th-century arcades. As our journey comes to a close, we will pass through the well-known Arco de la Estrella, reflecting on the important historical events that have taken place here throughout the years.
After an enlightening 2.5 hours filled with stories and discoveries, we conclude the tour at the Arco de la Estrella.
