Damascus Guided Walking Tour
Description
Markets, places of worship, and historical landmarks converge on this guided journey through Damascus, recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities worldwide. Prepare to embark on an exploration filled with rich history.
Tour Overview
We’ll convene at Al Hijaz railway station at the designated time, initiating our guided experience in Damascus, one of the earliest cities to be inhabited by humans.
Our first destination is the Old City, leading us to the prominent Al-Hamidiyah Souq. Here, we’ll appreciate the extensive metal canopy that stretches for over 600 meters (2,000 feet), allowing sunlight to illuminate the numerous market stalls below. The delightful scents of cotton, treats, and textiles will envelop us as we discuss the market's restoration efforts following a significant fire in the late 1800s.
Our journey continues to the Mausoleum of Saladin, dedicated to the revered Kurdish leader who reclaimed Jerusalem during the 12th century. Adjacent to this site is the Umayyad Mosque, a stunning structure erected atop the remnants of an ancient Roman temple and a Byzantine church. Its marble courtyards and golden mosaics showcase a legacy of harmonious coexistence over the centuries.
Next, we’ll pause to admire the façade of the Azem Palace, a remarkable illustration of traditional Damascene architectural style. We’ll explore its exquisite courtyards, fountains, and intricately adorned stone walls. Following this, we’ll delve into the spice souq, where the vibrant colors and enticing aromas of cardamom, saffron, and sumac will captivate our senses.
Our exploration continues along the famed Straight Street of Damascus, the city's most well-known Roman thoroughfare, guiding us to the Chapel of Saint Ananias. This site provides insight into the refuge associated with Saul’s conversion.
In conclusion, our 4-hour experience will culminate at the Window of Saint Paul, where, as legend has it, the apostle made his escape from the city.
