Cerro Verde Volcano and Mayan Ruins Trip
Description
Immerse yourself in a day filled with the captivating history and breathtaking landscapes of three remarkable sites in San Salvador. Your journey will take you into the stunning Natural Protected Area of Cerro Verde, while also transporting you back to the ancient Mayan civilization through the ruins of Joya de Cerén and San Andrés.
Description
Your adventure will commence with a pickup from your chosen location, leading into a one-hour scenic drive. Our first stop is the Los Volcanes National Park?, an expansive zone characterized by volcanoes and serene lakes.
As we arrive, prepare for an exhilarating 45-minute hike toward the impressive Cerro Verde Volcano, standing tall at an elevation of 2,035 meters (6,600 feet). We will traverse ecological trails that provide stunning views of the Santa Ana Volcano and the distinctive Izalco Volcano, known as the 'Lighthouse of the Pacific.'
Our trek takes us through an enchanting cloud forest, culminating near the crater close to the summit of Cerro Verde Volcano. Surrounded by indigenous plant life, such as the remarkable Giant Agave, we will soak in the magnificent sights of the Coatepeque volcanic lake, famed as one of the most picturesque in the world.
In the afternoon, we will navigate the captivating Salvadoran terrain as we proceed to the extraordinary archaeological site of Joya de Cerén. Often referred to as the "Pompeii of America," this site reveals a pre-Columbian Mayan agricultural settlement. As we wander through its streets, you will gain insights into the remarkable preservation of its structures.
Next, we will continue our journey to the archaeological site of San Andrés, delving deeper into the Mayan legacy. This site served as a vital ceremonial and political hub, where we will explore various structures once utilized by its leaders, alongside the remnants of an indigo mill buried during the El Playón eruption in 1658.
With a wealth of knowledge gained, we will return to San Salvador, marking the end of our enriching experience.
