Prepare to explore the stunning vistas and diverse ecosystems that characterize our hiking trail in Chicamocha Canyon. Spanning 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), this route offers an intimate experience with one of nature's true masterpieces.

Description

We will gather at the designated spot in Barichara's central park, from where we will board a minibus heading to the picturesque village of Villanueva. This captivating journey will take approximately two hours.

Once we arrive at Villanueva, we'll step off the minibus and proceed towards Alto de Martha, the launch point for our invigorating hike through the splendid Chicamocha Canyon.

This hiking experience covers 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and leads us through enchanting places like Macaregua, Mesa de los Santos, and charming communities such as Aratoca. En route, we will pause at the Rancho Alegre viewpoint, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the canyon, an ideal moment for photography!

At this picturesque location, we’ll take a brief break to discuss the geological transformations this area has undergone throughout the years. An interesting tidbit: it was nominated as one of the Natural Wonders of the World.

As we progress on our hike, we will delve into the lush flora of the Chicamocha Canyon, enjoy views of its flowing river, and watch for the local wildlife, including birds and monkeys that inhabit this National Park. We’ll also traverse sections of cobblestone pathways crafted by the German engineer Geo von Lengerke during colonial times.

Recognizing the intensive nature of this 5-hour trek, we'll take a moment to savor a picnic featuring a sandwich, fresh fruit, and water.

Rejuvenated, we will make our way to the final stretch of our hike towards the town of Jordan, where our minibus will be waiting. After a complete experience lasting around 9 hours, we will return to where our adventure began in Barichara.
