Churubamba & Papahuasi Valley Excursion
Description
This excursion to the Churubamba and Papahuasi region offers an opportunity to explore one of Huánuco's most culturally rich valleys, along with a visit to a historic colonial estate.
Churubamba & Papahuasi Valley Excursion
You'll be collected from your accommodation in Huánuco at 8 am and transported along the scenic left bank of the Huallaga River, heading toward the Papahuasi Valley, recognized for its significant pre-Inca civilization.
As we journey through this picturesque valley, the first stop will be the town of Churubamba. Here, we will visit the local district museum, where artifacts from the Papahuasi culture and other ancient civilizations await, including the remarkable Papahuasi mummies.
Our exploration continues at the Church of Santa Cruz, a 17th-century structure linked to Father Alonso de Abad, noted for his discovery of the renowned Boquerón del Padre Abad canyon. Insight into the life of this Franciscan monk and his association with the church will enrich your understanding of the area's history.
Moving on, we will view the seven colonial chapels that form a circle around the Church of Santa Cruz in Churubamba, symbolizing the seven falls of Christ—a key element during Holy Week celebrations in Huánuco.
Among these chapels, you'll find the Church of San Juan Bautista in Cascay, the Church of San Pedro in Utao, and the Church of San Nicolás in Tambogan, each dating back to the 17th century with remnants from the colonial era. In San Pedro, an exhibition of traditional clothing and Quechua handicrafts adds to the cultural experience.
Next, we’ll visit a local trout farm to observe the practices of trout farming in the region. Afterward, the itinerary includes a tour of the colonial hacienda of Quenra, where you’ll gain insights into the lifestyle of landowners from the 1200s through a guided exploration of the estate and its agricultural areas.
We will conclude our excursion with a return to Huánuco, where you will arrive back at your hotel around 2 pm.
