Cueva de las Maravillas & Altos de Chavón Excursion
Your adventure begins with a timely pickup from your hotel, after which we'll set off towards the Cueva de las Maravillas National Park.
Upon our arrival, you will first venture into a museum showcasing a rich collection of archaeological items discovered within the cave. Following this, we will proceed into the Cueva de las Maravillas, which stretches an impressive 800 meters (2,624 ft) in length and reaches 25 meters (82 ft) in depth. Within these caves, you might spot centipedes, lizards, and up to three species of bats. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this location is undoubtedly the ancient Taino paintings, which date back approximately 800 years!
As we exit the cave, a visit to a rhinoceros iguana conservation center awaits, where you’ll learn about this endangered species, capable of reaching nearly 2 meters in length.
The next destination is Altos de Chavón, a charming Mediterranean-style village perched on a hillside with stunning views of the Chavón River. A leisurely stroll will allow you to discover its key attractions, including a noteworthy amphitheater.
Following our explorations, a delightful lunch at the Bibelenke Restaurant and Piano Bar in La Romana awaits. Here, you will savor traditional dishes such as chicken bandera, sancocho soup, moro de guandules cooked with coconut, and fried fish rounds.
After our meal, we’ll visit a craft shop to sample local coffee and mamajuana, as well as view a cigar exhibition. We will then head back to the initial meeting point. The entire experience is expected to last around 9 hours, culminating with your return to the hotel.
