El Djem, Douz & Kairouan 2-Day Private Tour
Description
The charm of Tunisia's sandy landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and stunning architecture beckons on this 2-day adventure to El Djem, Douz, and Kairouan. Discover some of the nation's most iconic landmarks along the way.
Description
Day 1: El Djem – Matmata – Douz
Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Hammamet, after which we'll make our way to the renowned El Djem amphitheater. This magnificent structure is noteworthy as the third-largest amphitheater globally, with a capacity for approximately 30,000 spectators who once gathered for gladiatorial contests.
After delving into the fascinating tales of ancient warriors, we proceed to the Matmata cave-houses, located in the Amazigh region. These unique dwellings, carved into the mountains, provide refuge from the harsh desert climate. You will have about one hour of leisure to enjoy lunch at a local eatery (not included).
The adventure continues as we venture into the Douz desert, regarded as the gateway to the Sahara. As you take in the vast sand dunes, consider engaging in an optional quad bike or camel ride at an extra cost.
Following our desert exploration, we'll check into a hotel in Douz for a well-deserved rest before embarking on the next day's travels.
Day 2: Douz – Chott Djerid – Oasis - Kairouan
After enjoying breakfast (not included), we set out towards Chott El Djerid, Tunisia's expansive salt lake. This extraordinary site extends for 250 kilometers (155 miles) across the landscape.
Next, we ascend into the Atlas Mountains to discover the picturesque oases of Chebika and Tamerza. The final highlight of our two-day expedition will be Kairouan, recognized as Islam's fourth holy city. Here, we'll explore the famed Great Mosque, marveling at its intricate exterior while our guide shares insights into its significance within the Islamic world.
The tour concludes with a return to your hotel in Hammamet.
