Private Tour of Caltagirone
Description
During this exclusive journey through Caltagirone, we will delve into the charm of this Sicilian city, renowned for its exquisite ceramics as well as its Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture.
Description
Our adventure begins at the designated meeting point, the Public Garden of Caltagirone, celebrated as one of the most enchanting gardens in Italy. This verdant space showcases Art Nouveau features along with an Arabic-inspired stage and the Belvedere Theater.
We will stroll past the Ceramics Museum while proceeding along the principal street, entering the historic core of Caltagirone. Here stands the Tondo Vecchio, an 18th-century structure currently utilized for outdoor performances.
The tour continues across the San Francesco Bridge, where we will appreciate its five archways and the typical ceramic vases crafted by local artisans. Erected in the 17th century, this bridge connects two of the three hills upon which the city was established.
As we meander through Caltagirone's charming streets, the magnificent Baroque and Art Nouveau churches and palaces will unfold before us, reaching a peak at the Cathedral of San Giuliano. With its striking bell tower, soaring to 48 meters, this temple exemplifies Art Nouveau design and features a breathtaking majolica dome. Inside, a collection of frescoes depicting scenes from the Old Testament and intricate Baroque wooden decor await discovery.
Just a short walk away, we will arrive at the Piazza del Municipio, embraced by elegant buildings such as the neoclassical Palazzo dell'Aquila and the previous Palazzo Senatorio, which houses the Luigi Sturzo Gallery.
We will conclude our exploration at one of the town's most significant landmarks: the famed Santa Maria del Monte staircase. Built in the 17th century, this remarkable structure connects the historic city center to the contemporary part of town. The staircase, adorned with vibrant ceramic tiles along its 142 steps, takes center stage during events like the Infiorata festival, when flowers enhance its beauty, or the Patron Saint festival, when it is aglow with 4,000 candles, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
After two hours of exploration, our private tour of Caltagirone concludes at this iconic site.
