Guided Tour of Negombo
Description
Description
Join us on this insightful journey to explore the rich history, colonial heritage, and culinary delights of Negombo, often referred to as the gateway to Sri Lanka. This experience promises to be unforgettable.
Itinerary
Our exploration will kick off at the Sri Mutthu Mari Amman Temple, an exquisite Hindu shrine that showcases the multicultural fabric of Negombo. Are you ready to delve into the local culture?
Next, we’ll make our way to a bustling local market, where the vibrant hues and enticing scents of the fresh produce stalls will captivate your senses. This is a fantastic chance to witness the daily lives of the residents of Negombo.
Continuing along King George Drive, named in honour of the royal visit in 1901, we will stroll beside the Indian Ocean, moving towards the main fishing district, home to the dried fish processing centre. Here, you’ll observe traditional methods of preparing and drying fish, a practice rooted in the community’s history.
Our journey leads us to the bustling Lellama fish market, the largest in the area, where discussions will center on the significance of the local fishing industry. As we walk past the old prison, part of the historic Dutch fort, we’ll reflect on the impact of colonial times in Negombo.
We will then proceed to the renowned Kothalawala Bridge, giving us the opportunity to admire picturesque views of the fishing boats navigating the lagoon—perfect for taking memorable photos!
Our path will take us to St. Mary's Church, a striking illustration of colonial architectural style. Interestingly, this church was constructed by the Dutch during their time in Ceylon. To conclude our tour, we’ll delight in a tasting session featuring a variety of local Sri Lankan dishes, from spicy to sweet, complemented by a refreshing soft drink.
After two enriching hours, we will wrap up our guided exploration of Negombo and bid farewell.
