Villeneuve-lès-Avignon Guided Walking Tour
Description
Towers, oratories, and narrow medieval streets take center stage on this guided walking tour of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, a beautiful town separated from Avignon by the Rhône River.
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll kick off this guided walking tour of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon under the Tour Philippe-le-Bel. This 14th-century tower, commissioned by Philip IV, known as “Philip the Fair,” located on the shores of the Rhône, is a privileged location where the famous Pont d'Avignon was used as the city's main defense.
After learning about its history, we'll continue our tour of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon by strolling around the medieval streets of the town, where you'll see the bell tower of the Church of Saint Pons. You'll also see former palaces, like the Hôtel des Monnaies or the Maison Orsini.
Our next stop will be at the Place de l'Oratoire. From this square, one of the most picturesque squares in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, we'll head to the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame. We'll admire its Gothic architecture from the outside, seeing its bell tower that looks like a defense tower.
Then, we'll pass the Museé Pierre-de-Luxembourg, a famous gallery located within a former palace from the 17th century, where the cardinal Ceccano resided. Afterward, we'll go to other important places in the historic center, such as Place Jean Jaurès.
Lastly, we'll head to the Fort Saint-André, one of the main medieval forts of Provenza, where we'll say our goodbyes after 2 hours.
