Hostalric Castle: A Heritage of Catalonia

Perched atop a hill in the volcanic area of La Garrocha, Hostalric Castle represents one of Catalonia's most notable historical monuments. Initially erected in 1145, this fortress featured three bastions, defensive towers, a moat, and two ravelins, though it was dismantled by French forces in 1695.

The castle’s contemporary design, originating from 1716, is credited to the engineer general of Philip V, Prospero de Verboom, the same figure responsible for the Citadel of Barcelona and the fortifications of La Seu Vella de Lleida. In 1963, both the castle and its walls received recognition as Assets of National Interest.

Exploring Hostalric Castle

With your ticket to Hostalric Castle, you will journey into the medieval history that shaped the town's identity along the banks of the Tordera River. You will pass through the subterranean access to admire the carriage portal, the guardhouse, the bastion of Santa Tecla, and the weapons square. A section of the castle has also been converted into a dining establishment.

Access to the castle is via a fortified road from the late Middle Ages. This path is flanked by two parallel walls that were once defended by circular towers, with only a small remnant remaining today. Nevertheless, from the heights of the fortress, you can appreciate stunning panoramic views of La Garrocha.
