Day Trip to the Huasco Salt Flats + Tambillo

Situated on the border of Bolivia and Chile, you will find one of the most significant salt reserves in South America. Join us for a day of exploration through the stunning vistas of the Huasco Salt Flats and the Tambillo nature reserve.

Day Adventure: Huasco Salt Flats & Tambillo

Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Pica at 8:30 am, followed by a ride in a 4x4 to the remarkable Huasco Salt Flat, a stunning natural haven located in the Tarapacá region of Chile, close to the border with Bolivia.

Upon arrival, guests will enjoy a light snack featuring an energy bar, nuts, fruit, and a choice of coffee or herbal tea. Once refreshed, we will embark on a 1-kilometer (0.62-mile) trek across this breathtaking salt flat, which lies at an elevation of 4000 meters (13,123 feet). The altitude contributes a distinctive allure to these landscapes, creating a memorable visual experience.

During the next hour, we will traverse the Huasco salt flat, keeping an eye out for local wildlife such as flamingos, rheas, and a variety of desert birds. This section will allow us to delve into the ways in which these creatures adapt to their harsh surroundings.

Following our hike at the Huasco salt flat, we will return to our vehicle and head towards the nearby Tambillo nature reserve. Here, we’ll explore its magnificent gorge and examine several pictographs from pre-Columbian eras.

Concluding our day, we will make our way back to your hotel in Pica, arriving around 1 pm.
