Cordoba Jewish Quarter Tour
Description
Explore the rich heritage of the Jewish community through a captivating journey in the Jewish Quarter of Cordoba. The charming cobbled pathways are sure to captivate your heart.
Tour Overview
At the scheduled time, we’ll convene at the designated meeting point to kick off our exploration of the Jewish Quarter of Cordoba. Get ready for an enriching experience!
To truly understand the Jewish presence in Cordoba, we must journey back to the Roman period. The city's walled boundaries established during the Augustan era now encompass the very section where the Jewish quarter resides, facilitating the organisation and urban development of the Jewish Quarter.
With the advent of Muslim rule, the Jewish population gained significant influence, as key architectural landmarks emerged within their vicinity. This dynamic continued until their eventual expulsion under the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, as the Jews inhabited the area we will explore.
During our walk through the Jewish Quarter, we will stop at the Plaza de Maimonides and delve into its historical names, including Plaza de los Armentas, named after a prominent family from the area, and Plaza del Arcediano. Here, you will also find the current location of the Bullfighting Museum.
Next, we’ll navigate the narrow and winding streets, some of which lead to dead ends, showcasing the unique urban development of medieval cities. We will visit sites cherished by followers of the Star of David, including the municipal souk and the market.
After an hour of immersive exploration in the Jewish Quarter of Cordoba, we will head back to our starting location.
