The Monastery of Leyre and Javier Castle Day Trip
Description
The essence of Romanesque architecture, the medieval legacy of Navarre, and stunning vistas of the Pre-Pyrenees converge in this day tour to the Leyre Monastery and Javier Castle. An exploration of two remarkable architectural highlights of Navarre!
Details of the Day Trip
We will convene at the bus station in Pamplona to embark on a 40-minute journey into the enchanting Navarran Pre-Pyrenees. Prepare to immerse yourself in breathtaking landscapes!
Our route will include a quick stop at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Yesa Reservoir, where we’ll appreciate this impressive 20th-century hydraulic work constructed on the Aragón River. It's the perfect moment for our first snapshot!
Continuing on, we’ll arrive at the San Salvador de Leyre Monastery, one of Navarre's most ancient monastic establishments. Once we arrive, we’ll participate in a 45-minute guided exploration, featuring its Romanesque crypt, known for its architectural purity and robust pillars complemented by semicircular arches.
Our next stop will be the Porta Speciosa, a richly adorned 12th-century entrance adorned with sculptural reliefs illustrating biblical narratives. Interestingly, the remains of the initial monarchs of Navarre rest within this monastery. Following this, we’ll proceed into the abbey church, analyzing its design evolution and significance in Benedictine monastic tradition.
The journey will lead us to Javier Castle, located just 20 minutes away. This medieval fortress showcases numerous defensive features, including towers, battlements, and a wall system harmonized with the landscape.
We will embark on a 45-minute tour of the castle, visiting its diverse chambers while gaining insights into St. Francis Xavier, alongside the story of the castle's partial destruction in the 16th century under the orders of the Crown of Castile. What motivated this decision? Which sections were taken down?
To conclude our adventure, you will have 1 hour of leisure to relax and enjoy lunch before we make our way back to Pamplona. We’ll wrap up our day at the original meeting point after a fulfilling 5 hours.
