National Maritime Museum of Rochefort Tickets
Description
Experience the fascinating heritage of French naval history as you visit this remarkable museum featuring ship models, artworks, and navigational artifacts.
National Maritime Museum of Rochefort
Housed in the historic Hôtel de Cheusses, recognized as the oldest secular structure in Rochefort, this museum offers a distinctive glimpse into the French Navy, all situated along the picturesque Charente River.
Your entry to the National Maritime Museum allows for a self-guided exploration of an arsenal laid out under Louis XIV. The collection boasts an array of navigational instruments, ship models, paintings, and various historical items that tell the story of this former depot.
Among the exhibition's treasures are detailed models of iconic ships like Le Plongeur, La Vestale, Le Royal, Le Dauphin Royal, and Le Météore.
Another impressive feature is the model of Fort Boyard, originally created for the 1867 Universal Exhibition. This intricate representation showcases the fort’s Napoleonic design. The actual fort sits strategically between the islands of Aix and Oléron, near La Rochelle, gaining fame in the 1990s through a popular television program shot on location.
Additionally, the collection includes pieces related to maritime health, such as medical tools from the Naval Medical School.
Your visit to this museum can be comfortably completed in approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, although you are welcome to linger and absorb the exhibits as long as you desire.
