Description
Explore the picturesque town of Santoña nestled along the northern coast of Spain with our engaging guided tour. Delve into the captivating history of this remarkable location as you visit key attractions, including its bustling fishing port and the vibrant fish auction room.
Tour Overview
The journey begins adjacent to the Monument to Juan de la Cosa, a renowned navigator and cartographer from Santoña. As we proceed along the charming Paseo de Pereda, aligned with the breathtaking Cantabrian coast, you will be captivated by tales of his remarkable contributions and milestones. At one end of this tasteful promenade, admire the Fort of San Martín, one of the historical bastions that defended the town during the Napoleonic invasions in the 19th century.
Not far from here, we will come across a sculpture honoring the local carnival, recognized as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest. After learning about this colorful celebration, discover intriguing details about the Torre de la Aguada, a former reservoir that provided water for steamships during the first half of the 20th century.
As we admire the coastal views, we will explore the maritime heritage of Santoña, uncovering significant terms such as secadero and tintero. You'll grasp the stories that give life to these expressions!
Next, our route leads us to the Plaza de Toros de Santoña, the bullring conveniently located near the port and the Fish Market. Our final destination will be the fishing port, where you will learn about the town's lasting fishing tradition and the crucial role this industry plays in the economy, particularly through the celebrated Cantabrian anchovy.
We will visit the auction room within the port to observe the vibrant fish trading that occurs with fresh catches arriving directly from the sea. This marks the conclusion of our tour.
