Description
During this Berat tour, participants will have the opportunity to explore the historical castle and the ancient neighborhoods, delving into the city’s rich tapestry of culture and history. Join us for this enlightening experience!
Tour Overview
At the agreed-upon time, we will convene at Saint Demetrius Orthodox Cathedral. Once everyone is gathered, we will commence our guided exploration of Berat, frequently referred to as the 'city of a thousand windows'. This moniker reflects the striking clusters of white-fronted homes adorning the hillside where the city is situated.
Following a brief introduction, we will board a vehicle and travel to Berat Castle, which is located on a mountain rising 200 meters (656 ft) above sea level. This historic structure once served as the heart of ancient Berat, and now stands as a walled district.
Interestingly, this fortress is recognized as one of the largest inhabited fortifications in the Balkans, with over 500 residents living in its 120 medieval homes. As we navigate its charming streets, we will delve into the history of the fortress, visiting significant sites such as St. Mary of Blachernae Church, St. Nicholas Church, the Acropolis, and the White and Red Mosques. We will also take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking views from the castle’s lookout point.
Once we finish our historical journey, we will return to our vehicle to explore Berat's other two neighborhoods: the Gorica district and the Mangalem district. In Gorica, we'll traverse the Gorica Bridge, an important landmark in the city’s development, while admiring its typical homes.
Continuing the tour, we will cross a suspension bridge to Mangalem. Characterized by its steep cobbled pathways and tall vertical houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, this district symbolizes the essence of Berat. We will meander through the medieval quarter, where we find the Helveti Tekke and the King Mosque. Inside these sites, we will uncover insights regarding the city’s Islamic history.
Our journey will lead us to Berat's most vibrant thoroughfare, Republika Boulevard, wrapping up the guided tour after approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, back at our original meeting location.
