Cimarrón Monument & El Cobre Sanctuary Tour
Description
This journey invites you to explore the rich history surrounding the El Cobre Sanctuary and the Cimarrón Monument, both significant landmarks in southern Cuba.
Excursion to Cimarrón Monument & El Cobre Sanctuary
We will gather at the Plaza de Marte at the designated time. From this central location in Santiago de Cuba, we will set off in a classic car, making our way to El Cobre, only a brief 40-minute drive away.
This town, rooted in colonial history, once held great significance due to its copper mines. Our first stop will be the Cimarrón Monument, erected to honor the enslaved copper miners of the 17th century. This site is part of a UNESCO initiative aimed at highlighting the stories of those who endured slavery and contributed to Cuba's history. As we ascend towards the monument, we will have the opportunity to appreciate the stunning natural vistas that surround this historic area.
Our tour will then guide us to the renowned El Cobre Sanctuary, officially known as the Basilica Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. The sanctuary is notable for its staircase of 254 steps leading to its entrance, marking it as one of the principal places of worship in southern Cuba. Here, we will delve into the deep religious significance this site holds for many Cubans. A noteworthy fact is that Pope Francis visited the sanctuary and prayed at its altar during his journey to the island in 2015.
Following our exploration of the basilica, we will enjoy a brief stroll through the town of El Cobre before concluding our tour and returning to Santiago de Cuba in our classic vehicle, wrapping up about four hours later.
