Guided Tour of the Jewish Quarter of Besalú
At your chosen time, we will gather in front of the iconic Romanesque bridge that spans the Fluvià River to commence our exploration of Besalú.
Crossing to the other side invites you into the medieval heart of one of the prettiest villages in Girona. We will explore significant landmarks, with the Call, the historic Jewish quarter, taking precedence. This area is characterized by its charming and narrow streets, transporting us back through the ages.
The expulsion of the Jewish populace by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 marked a significant historical transition. Despite the passage of time, their cultural imprint remains, and our journey includes a visit to one of the four surviving miqves in Europe. Here, in this historic structure that once served as a Jewish bathing hall, we will uncover the ritual of purification.
As we traverse the Call, insights into the traditions, customs, culture, and culinary practices of the Besalú Jewish community will unfold. Additionally, we will explore the backgrounds of other notable sites, including the San Pedro Monastery, a striking establishment founded in the 11th century by Count Bernardo I of Besalú.
After an enlightening two hours of walking through the enchanting streets of Besalú, our journey will culminate in the heart of this historic town.
